Why we built /check/: a smart dispatcher for network queries

Published 2026-10-05

You have a string in your hand — a URL, an IP, a domain — and you want to know what's going on with it. You do not want to decide which of the 20 sitetrace tools to use. /check/ makes that decision for you.

TL;DR

Paste any URL, IP, or domain. /check/ figures out what you mean and runs the right network tool. It's the fastest path to an answer.

How it classifies input

A 5-line classifier runs in your browser. If the input parses as an IPv4 or IPv6 address, you get an IP report. If it parses as a URL (begins with http, or contains a slash beyond the apex), you get a URL report. Anything else with at least one dot is treated as a domain. The classifier does not talk to any server — it just decides which of three result panels to show.

What it actually checks

For IPs: geolocation, ASN, ISP, hosting classification, VPN/proxy/Tor detection, DNSBL reputation. For URLs: HTTP status, response headers, redirect chain, content type, latency. For domains: DNS records (A, AAAA, MX, TXT, NS), HTTP headers, certificate, whois registrar. All checks run in parallel against the sitetrace-api backend.

When to use /check/ vs a specific tool

Use /check/ when you want a fast combined look across multiple data sources. Use a specific tool when you want a deep report on one aspect. For example: /ip-lookup/ for a thorough IP report (it runs more databases than /check/ does), /headers-checker/ for a security header grade, /cert-checker/ for the full certificate history. /check/ is the smoke detector — specific tools are the specialists.

Free tier limits

100 anonymous calls per day per IP for /check/. That's enough for ~30 sessions. If you hit the cap, sign up for a free API key at sitetrace.it.com/signup for 1,000 calls per day. The individual tool pages are unlimited for the read-only checks they expose (rate-limited per-IP to prevent abuse).
