How to check if a website is really down (and not just you)
A website won't load. Is it down for everyone, or is your network, your DNS resolver, or your browser blocking it? This post walks through the diagnostic flow and the common failure modes.
TL;DR
If a site won't load, the question is "is it them or me?" Here is how to find out in 10 seconds using reachability tests and live status pages.
Run a reachability test from a different vantage point
The fastest way to know if a site is really down is to ask a server in a different network. /is-it-down/ does exactly this — it probes the URL from a Cloudflare Worker and returns the status code. If the worker gets a 200 and your browser gets nothing, the problem is on your side.
Check the official status page
Most large services (GitHub, Cloudflare, Discord, Steam, OpenAI, Reddit, Twitter/X) run an official status page on Atlassian Statuspage or Status.io. The /is-it-down/ tool includes a live status indicator for 50+ popular services, pulled directly from each service's official status feed. If the indicator is green but you can't reach the site, the problem is on your side.
Common false positives
Three things look like "the site is down" but are actually your problem: (1) DNS resolution failure (your resolver has a stale cache, or your ISP blocks the domain); (2) your browser blocks a redirect (HTTPS-only mode, mixed content blocking, tracking protection breaking a single-page app); (3) regional content blocking (the site restricts access from your country). All three will show the site as unreachable to you and reachable to everyone else.
When to give up and try later
If the official status page says "all systems operational" and a third-party reachability test returns 200 and you still can't load the site, the problem is your local network or browser. Try a different network (mobile data instead of Wi-Fi), clear your browser cache, or use a different browser. If the official status page says there is an incident, sit tight — most incidents resolve in 30–60 minutes.
